Exploring free form

I'll admit it. I used to be soley a pattern / template girl. It used to be really, really hard for me to stray off the documented path to create something without guidance. I've gotten a bit better but this year I will be working hard to break away from patterns / templates / guides and be a lot more improvisation and free form in my creative endeavors. That is one of the reasons I jumped at the chance to join this round robin quilt group. It is all about free form and using what you have in your stash (another goal of mine for 2012-minimize the stuff).

This is my starter block. Simple, clean and (intentionally) not quite square (measures ~14" x 15"). The block has arrived safely at Laney's. Part of me doesn't want to see any 'in progress' photos and just wants to see the final when it arrives back home. The other, more controlling-cannot-wait-to-find-out part of me wants to stalk flickr awaiting updates as the quilt makes its rounds.

Meanwhile, Lynz has sent her block off already and I'll be the 1st one to add to it. You should see it-amazing started block. Off to do some creative thinking.

Total AFFB quilt to date: $2.65 or so in postage. That's it! Fabric, thread, journal, jewels and shipping envelope were all items I had on hand. Score and score!

I am nothing if not

consistently inconsistent when it comes to posting on this blog. I find that, while my intentions are good, I don't always enjoy the prospect of weeding through photos, cropping, uploading, etc and that lends itself to be an easy excuse not to blog more regularly. A friend of mine has recently started blogging and she's motivated me to try to be a bit more consistent and thoughtful in my blogging. How long will it last? Time will tell.

Happy (belated) New Year!!! I don't really do resolutions because I figure why wait for the new year to start. This year a few pals and I started an enabler's club. Positive enabling. If we meet our goal(s) for the month then our name goes in to the kitty to get a small value gift card funded by the other participants. I am doing well so far and am on track for January. Whenever I feel like wavering, I think of the gift card and how I could use that to buy supplies for lil bit's scrapbook (who knew scrap booking could be so expensive?). Thanks to a dear friend, I have a number of scrap book pages that I just need to add the photos to and do a bit of journaling. I'm still about 14 months behind (keep in mind lil bit is only 2) but I am gaining ground.

I found an idea about 3 months ago. A snowman ornament using fingerprints. What a great (and easy) idea. Surely that can't take too long to put together. I must have all the supplies already, right? Well, I had most of the supplies and came by the background piece at ACMoore pretty easily (if you discount the 20 minutes I spent traversing the store looking for a canvas substitute). Time, on the other hand (no pun intended), was a supply that I had run short on.

So, just under the wire, this ornament made it on to our Christmas tree last evening. I followed this tutorial except that I used Aleene's Tacky Glue to glue the ribbon to the back and then I covered the entire front and back with Mod Podge. Oh, and I put a piece of scrapbook paper on the back to make it pretty and provide a nice surface to write the details (not pictured, sorry).

Not the greatest photo but the colors are actually pretty true to life.

Total cost: $0.87 for the small wood piece used for the background.

All the other supplies I had on hand (acrylic craft paint, sharpies, brushes, Mod Podge, glue, scrapbook paper and ribbon).

And while what I have pictured is a tree ornament, I have plans to make the same (w/o the background color) on some colored cardstock to make postcards to mail out this winter.

Decking the halls

As each year passes I seem to be coming later and later to the holiday game. My shopping is done but I just keep dragging my feet when it comes to decorating. Once it's done, I love it and wonder why I was hemming and hawing so much.

For the last few years I've said that I wanted I decorated the side porch. At the end of each Christmas season I kick myself for not doing it. This year I finally did it. Not the tree I was originally thinking but I like this all the same. I may need to add a bit more to it....let's see how much energy I have (and funds and supplies) once the inside is finished.

Tag, you're it

Because I need another hobby like I need a hole in my head.... Monday evening I went with a gal pal of mine to a scrapbooking workshop where we made holiday gift tags and cards. I like the satisfaction of sitting down and being able to leave with a finished product. Sewing, while something I enjoy doing, usually takes me a few times at the machine to complete a project. And, since my sewing room is away from the main living space, it can (although not always a bad thing) leave me feeling a bit isolated.

Here's what I came home with: (4) cards and (6 actually there are 8 but I forgot to take the picture) tags (there are (3 4) different kinds of tags). Now I am going to have to rethink my gift wrapping...maybe this year it will be brown craft paper.

I think the blue one is my favorite. Simple, clean and kinda modern.

And, did I mention that I'm working on a scrapbook for baby pictures? I started off saying, "Nothing fancy, just a place to record and document what's going on." Well, thanks to another great gal pal of mine who is in to paper crafts but not scrapbooking, I've been getting some really cool pages. Now all I need to do is get some photos printed and do some journaling. Only 15 months left and I'll be up to date. Geesh!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I hope this holiday finds you safe, healthy and surrounded by those you love, or at least like.

Want to make a turkey shirt for your toddler or yourself? Yea, ok, file it away for next year. Or maybe you have a late Thanksgiving event this weekend.

Partial cast of characters:

1. Sketch out the body shape with a disappearing ink pen (fabric stores have them), pencil, dress makers chalk, etc. Or, trace your toddler's foot (with a shoe on).
2. Paint up both hands and stamp on the fabric (I used 100% cotton) overlapping the body lines a bit. Fill in areas with a paintbrush. Let dry.
3. Repeat with other colors. Set paint per manufacturer directions.
4. Iron fusible web to the back of a brown piece of fabric. Cut a turkey body shape and fuse on to the background fabric. You could sew this on.
5. Iron fusible web to an orange piece of fabric. Cut into a triangle shape (this is the beak).
6. Take a piece of red ribbon and make a loop. Secure end with fabric glue. Let dry.
7. Lay the ribbon in place with the orange beak on top. Fuse to the body fabric.
8. Stitch legs and feet with embroidery thread. Or, sew on a sewing machine, use ribbon, rickrack, whatever you've got on hand.

I made the turkey on a piece of Kona 100% cotton. Since this is a 1-holiday wear, I wanted to be able to save it. Attaching it to the shirt with a quick basting stitch allows me to take it off and put it in her scrapbook.

The hair flower clip is a la a tutorial from A Girl and a Glue Gun. Gobble gobble.

Checking the Asterisk Quilt off the list

A late summer finish (never mind that it was started 14 months ago) adding a bit of cheer to late fall grey skies. The asterisk quilt is finally done!!!

The blocks in this quilt were made by the Bee Obsessed virtual quilt group over on Flicker. I had planned to make it twin size but, well, I just got tired of making more blocks. Now it's a great picnic size quilt for a little girl and her friends. I picked the theme and all the fabric came from stashes. I loved examining each and every block when they arrived - sew much fun to see how others put fabrics together, find common patterns, etc.

That brings my WIP quilt list down to:

1. Red and white flimsy a la Denyse Schmidt for my nephew (it's been waiting for almost 2 years).
2. Assembling my husband's brown and orange quilt (his color request).
3. Black, white and green string quilt for another virtual bee. I'm actually working on quilting this one now.
4. Assembling the rainbow block quilt (from another flickr bee).

The (magnetic) spice of life

I've seen magnetic spice racks around and wanted one for a while. Our kitchen doesn't have a lot of storage space so we try to maximize wherever possible. I, however, am cheap, cheap, cheap and wasn't going to pay the prices I was seeing in the stores. I knew there had to be a DIY way out. One quick google search yielded lots of tutorials. Some called for flashing and epoxy or glue and magnetics. All good ideas but more work then I was looking for.

I found this magnetic sheeting that has adhesive on the back and it only required a j-roller or rolling pin to help adhere to the foundation material. Next I found these tins (which I bought way more than I needed).
Total cost for the magnetic sheet (and I only used 1/2 of it ) ~$25.00.
Total cost for the tins (and I ordered 36 in 3 different sizes) ~$45.00.

So far, I've only used 15 or so tins for the spice rack. Total project cost: ~$31.25 with room to add more tins.  Cheaper than the box stores, customizable? I call that a win!

The magnetic sheet is super easy to install.  Wipe the surface clean with alcohol, peel the backing paper off and add some pressure. Even easier since my dad and step mom did the install for me. I don't have a j-roller so they used a rolling pin. Two weeks later and everything is still perfectly in place.

Love that the pepper container is magnetic!!

I love my label maker. My dad even got in on the label making act.

More room in the cupboard makes for a ~~happy~~ happier husband.

I don't know why I waited so long to do this. Now I cannot wait to do the same in the sewing room.

Pft, Pft. Is this thing on? Is there anyone still out there. My dear ol' dad said he stopped by my blog the other day and said nothing had changed. Ah, yea. Thanks, dad, for that kick in the butt. No sense trying to recap the last 6 months - the gist of it is everyone is healthy, accounted for and doing well.

I can hardly believe that the holidays are, well, basically here. Halloween was fun. I punked out and bought lil bit a costume in lieu of making one (like I did last year). So, thanks to mass production and local halloween shops, she was the cutest, smartest Smurfette anyone ever did see.

This time next week I will be knee deep in Holiday Shoppes. It is the best way I know to kick off the holiday season and do a bit of shoppping all while helping a great organization (yes, I am biased) do some great things in our community.

Well, not really. I started this knitting project back in November as part of a Ravelry group (group: Criminal Minds) mystery shawl KAL. After a few starts (I started over 3x), I finally finished the bind off and blocking last weekend. Now I have to figure out how to wear it. I've been plaiying around with it but, man, I feel kindof dorky wearing it (like it doesn't look right on me or something). I've gotten a few compliments on it (including one from my husband :) ) so I'll keep at it. Plus, I have another smaller shawl on the needles already.

When it comes time to reblock this shawl, I will do so without adding points to the edges. Those have pretty much fallen out already. Also, I may need to invest in some blocking wires if I am going to be knitting more shawls / kerchiefs.

UPDATE: I spontaenously gifted this to one of the most creative people I know. If anyone knows how to wear a shawl / wrap this big, Nadine does.

Winter Picnik

Well, not a real picnic. Although, my family used to go on picnics in the winter complete with a fire in a snow pit. Anywho, thanks to Cheri and her fabulous picnik tutorials (scroll down in this link and you'll find them), I have spent the last hour playing around with a few photos. This one is being printed by QOOP.com and sent on to my brother. Not bad for my first attempt.

Sweaters, socks, scarves and shawls...oh my

Technically, it should be sweater (as in one), sock and a half (as in I have 1/2 a sock theft to finish up the pair), scarf (as in I have put that project down to start a shawl) and shawl (b/c I just started the shawl).

Back in December 2009 I got the idea that I needed to knit a sweater for our then yet to be born baby that was due March 28th. Yarn purchased, cast on and moving along then came Feb 7th and I found myself delivering our baby daughter 7 weeks early. No worries - she's perfect and was in NICU for less than 2 weeks. But wait, I was knitting a 12 mos old size sweater under the guidance of all the moms out there that had told me that babies are often in 12 mos size by 9 mos or so. Using that math, lil bit would be in 12 mos size clothing around the end of December. Until, that is, you factor in that she was born 7 weeks early and is now, at 9 mos, is still wearing 6-9 month and some 3-6 month (pants) clothing. Following her current trend, it will be the middle of summer and I'll be cramming her in to a wool blend sweater (of course, I may have to turn the A/C on super high blast).

I've made decent progress (by my standards) on my 1st pair of knit socks. One is completely done and I'm turning the heel on the second one. I have no idea what I am going to do with the pair once they are done. Probably keep them for me and then start a gift pair.

The scarf? Yea, about that. I got bored and have been focusing on the socks. I think it would help me stay motivated if I was knitting it as a gift for someone but I'm not. Really, not sure what I'll do with it when I'm done.

So, over on ravelry.com you can find a slew of groups - pretty much for whatever your knitting fancies are. I jumped in to a group made up of fans of the showe Criminal Minds. Just this past Wednesday we started a new mystery shawl KAL. I am using this yarn (colorway Summer Blooms)bought from Knitpicks.com. I have 3 more rows to do and then I'll have finished clue #1. So far, so good. I got to learn a new cast on (garter tab) and how to K1F&B and only frogged it once b/c I dropped a stitch in the beginnning and figured it was easier to start over (translation: less stress for me to just frog and begin again since I was still on the garter tab step). The shawl designer, Threebagsfulled, emails a clue every Wednesday. Her directions are superbly written and easy to follow.

P.S. I knit a moebius a year ago. Didn't swatch. I knit tight. It's short. Have not blocked it. Am hoping that blocking will help and make it more to my liking. If not, guess it goes in the 'to be gifted' pile.

In first place, leading the pack by 7 lengths.......

I had every intention of having the costumes done 2 weeks ago. But, like many others, I was sewing at, literally, the last minute - as in moments before we walked out the door. As I've learned, there is a very limited window of opportunity with an 8 month old. And, if you're not ready to go you may miss your chance all together.

I cannot tell you how many times people ask us if we have a saddle for that dog. Well, not I can say, 'yes'. Both dog and infant did great - they were a big hit at all 3 houses we went to. I know, slow down, that's a crazy pace!!! :)

Wow! Now that's a big head. My 1st attempt at a hat. It wasn't until after I finished this that I realized how important a gauge swatch is. I am a tight knitter and used the size needle the pattern called for (Cabled Hat from Vermont Fibers). Yea, I should probably frog it and do it on the next size up needle but....

Yarn is from Imagiknit (purchased last summer). The hat was a quick knit and didn't give me much grief. I did find it very difficult to finish the very tip top of the hat. Probably should switch to dpns (was done a circular needle).

Learn how to knit socks!!

That's what I decided to do. Learn to knit socks - on 2 circular needles. I'm doing them one at a time but will, hopefully, jump up to 2 socks on 2 circular needles with the next pair of socks. I've skipped right past simple and practice right into a pattern (River Rapids Sock).

I was able to take a class with Deby Lake while we were on vacation this summer. You really should take a look at her designs. Oh, and she's such a nice lady, too!

So far, so ok. I've frogged the sock twice. I was trying to fix mistakes and just made it a bunch worse. Luckily, I was just past the ribbing on the cuff and not really into the pattern. Yea, I made a mistake in the first few rows of the pattern that I could not figure out how to fix.

It's done. It was not my original design. But, it was one I've been wanting to make for a while....for myself.

I was lucky enough to participate in Doll Quilt Swap #9 (DQS9). We had more than enough time to design, chose fabric, sew and post but I still found myself a bit under the gun. I just couldn't decide what I wanted to do. I really love the way this mini turned out. My partner has received it (along with a few goodies). I am happy to report the parcel made it safely across the big drink and is residing in a pink and white bedm in the UK.

It's kind of hard to see from the picture...the block is a wonky maverick star. The center fabric was fused on to a piece of backing then randomnly quilted then cut to size to be the center block of the star. I did some hand stitching with embroidery floss around the star and machine quilted random, fluid lines on the quilt top.

What have I accomplished in the month+ since I last posted? Not much besides gathering 400+ 2.5" squares to be made in to hexies, a few virtual bee blocks. Oh, and I'm almost done knitting a sweater (my 1st attempt) for the baby. Photos to come......

Speaking (eh, typing) of baby, she's rolling from front to back and back to front (just to her left not her right yet) and has been eating green beans and carrots! Cannot believe she's 5+ months already. "They" sure are right - the time does fly!

June's Buzz Cuts block for Jennie (Sunflowerquilts). I did not particularly enjoy cutting out all the 1.5" squares (wanted more variety than I felt I could get with strip piecing) and my piecing seems a bit 'wonky' but I do love the block (and adore the grey polka dot fabric). Jennie's going to have a great looking quilt when it's all said and done.

I've been bitten - bad!!!! Within the last 3 weeks I've participated in 2 charm pack swaps, ordered 10 charm packs and cut up 60+ squares. Squares for what? Squares for a hexagon project. I now have 400+ 2.5" squares sitting in my sewing room. It's a disease. No, I have no concrete plan or idea. I've made a few sketchs and I have a couple of, "oh, that's too cool - I want to make that" ideas but nothing written in stone yet. I wanted a project that I could take with me on summer vacation and hexies seem to fit the bill.

Meanwhile, I need to finish up (at least get the last seam done and press it) a bargello quilt I started a few weeks back.

Mmm, maybe I'll just cozy up in the overstuffed easy chair for a while.....Happy sewing!

I'm in! I made it. As luck would have it, I'm one of the newbies that made it in to the Doll Quilt Swap 9. If you have not heard of it, check out the flickr thread. There are some really great quilters in the group. You cannot help be get inspired when you look through the photos. Guess I better start adding some more content to my blog so my partner (it's a secret) can learn a bit more about me. I also have to get a mosaic of my favorites put together. I'm so excited!!!

Lord help me....

I just bought 8 1/4 yards of this fabric (all that was left at my LQS). Paid $5.00/yard - could not resist. Now, what in the world am I going to do with it??? Any suggestions?

Oh, let me also add that I already have a few yards of this in my stash (a sale when the same LQS was relocating). Anyone interested in a swap? I definitely have a bit to spare.

Did a bit of sewing today - nothing monumental but enough to check something off the 'to-do' list. Scootin' Annie has May in the Bee Obsessed virtual quilting bee. I happened to have a fire engine fabric that I received in a swap. It's the only piece of fabric that I have that fits the request. I actually still have to sew Kathy's block for April. I have the fabric but have not come up with a great idea yet and I don't want to settle just to get the block done. Anyway, here's May's block:

Early Arrival

I guess she just could not wait another 6+ weeks. Virginia Dian decided she was going to make her grand entrance on Feb 7th at 11:21pm. Weighed in at 4lb 10 oz and 17 inches long. She's still in NICU but holding her own quite well. Cannot wait until she comes home.

It's started. No ifs, ands or buts. Why not? Sure, I'm ~32 weeks pregnant. Sure, I have too many other things to be thinking about. Why the timing is perfect to start another project. And what a dozy this project is. I decided to make a Dear Jane quilt. The book and software arrived on Monday and I really intended to spend a few weeks thinking about what fabrics I'd like to use (scrappy, white/blue, white/red, modern, etc). I've been lurking around Anina's blog for a while now. Today I decided I'd just try one block. An easy one mind you - paper pieced. Pulled out some white Kona cotton and a scrap bin and whipped up my first Dear Jane block (D-6 Challenge).

Here's block 2 (M-12 Hopscotch). Completed today as well. I think I'm going to start with the 'beginner' blocks. Need to build up a bit of confidence. I used grey thread for both blocks. Not going to do that again with blocks that have so much white as I can see a bit of the grey. Don't like it but also don't want to redo the block. We all need to learn to live with a bit of imperfection, right?!

What have I gotten myself into?!!!!

Ok. so I am a few days late. I have no excuses. I'm just late. I hope that everyone had a safe and healthy holiday season. We stayed home and shared Christmas dinner with a few good friends then traveled to MI and upstate (further upstate then we live) last week. This being our last year with no children, I really wanted to stay home and enjoy the holiday. Everything will be changing soon....3 more months (give or take a day or two).

I managed to get a few projects done since my last post. This quilt was made by the participants in this virtual quilting bee. We all made a block from the fabrics I provided. The top was fun to put together although the bias edges gave me a bit of a fit. It's not perfectly square but I love it just the same. I free motion quilted in on my Pfaff CV. The bobbin tension is a bit wonky and I'll have to continue to diagnose that problem. Other than that, I love how crinkly it is. Obviously, Odin likes it to (he was only under the quilt for the photo then it promptly got removed and placed in waiting for TBA to arrive).

December I was lucky enough to be Sunflowerquilt's swap partner in Dec's STUD. I really love the mini I put together. I used fabric from my stash and was able to complete the petals without repeating any of the fabric. I used a combination of fusible and raw edge applique. I had visions (delusions) of making a full size quilt using the Joseph's Coat pattern But, let's be honest, I don't think I have the patience for all that hand applique. However, these ladies do and are doing a great job.

I am signed up for Jan's STUD theme (rainbows). My partner already has her mini done and ready to mail! I know what I am going to make, just have to do it.

Other than that, we are busy getting the nursery put together.

Well, in body only. My mind? That has been and continues to be very far away. I have managed, however, to get a bit of sewing done for virtual bees, swaps, etc.

Finished this fun teal and red mini in November for Boutiquenutmegdesigns. I had started out trying to make a cathedral window mini that failed miserably. The teal squares cut for the windows became the background for the red circles and couched embroidery thread. I think I'd like to make myself one in a bit larger size....

This wintery mini was made for Scootin' Annie for November's STUD. The past few seasons I've been drawn to the pink and green combo and who doesn't need a bit of wonkiness in their life? It's hard to tell from the photo, but there are beads hanging from the bottom of the mini.

And, last but not least, a few blocks for virtual bees.

The bathroom, with the exception of 1 3"x3" tile is completely done. Um, I have to get a towel ring yet and that's it. However, the 1/2 bath is experiencing some issues (namely having to replace the lead sewage pipe where it meets the cast iron flange). Oh, the joy of home ownership.

Bathroom Reno day 4

At the end of day 4 the tub is in place, walls in tub are ready to tile, floor is ready to go in, medicine cabinet is mostly in, plumbing is done (except for hooking up tub fixtures), newly found outlet is wired and ready to go. And there is dust. Everywhere. I mean everywhere in what seems like every room in the house. Add that to the dog hair and pine needles and I cannot keep up with the cleaning. And, let's be honest, there are so many other things to do that are much more fun than cleaning!

The chair rail is primed and will be painted white. The wall below the chair rail is going to be a slate/grey/blue color. I wanted to go darker and a bit more dramatic. However, to maintain marital bliss, we compromised. I like the color and think (*hope*) it will look good on the walls and blend nicely with the new floor and bath tile.

All in all, we are on track to have a completed bathroom by end of next week at the latest. Do you see that recessed area in the shower? There is a role of tape sitting in there now. Anyway, it's not exactly where I wanted it (wanted it lower on the wall) but I think this will be just fine and it has a bit of character as it mimics the roof line.

Our backyard is a carpet of maple and burning bush leaves (not too mention a bunch of other leaves I don't recognize) and oodles of pine needles. It's a bit overwhelming to think about going out and raking them all up. So, in an attempt to minimize my stress level, I decided to embrace the beauty and colors and use them as inspiration for November's mini quilt (6.5" - 12.5") swap. Lucky for me the theme for November is nature! This mini is ~ 8.5" x 11.25" inches. It was my 1st go at using my mini piping foot and I have to say I really like the touch the piping adds. I hope my swap partner likes the mini as much as I do.

One cannot really tell from the photo, but I did add some beads for a bit of detail. I will definitely be making one for myself. This one, however, was sent over to Nannette.

Bathroom Redo Day Two

After ~3 hours of work yesterday the Corning milkglass tile, toilet, sink and flooring were all removed. Day 1 was a success and gives me hope that all will be done by Nov 20th. Uncovered an electrical box w/ wires in the wall by the window. Hoping its live (glad it's never been a problem before) so we can have a 2nd outlet in the bathroom. See that black, rectangular box to the left of the window? That's our heating duct. Now, I'm not an advanced scientist or anything, but I do know that heat rises. So, why would anyone put a heat duct 1/2 way up a way, near a window, in a 2nd floor bathroom? I should not complain as our 1/2 bath on the 1st floor does not have any heating duct.

End of day 2 and ~6 hours of work. The plumbing for the sink has been done (had to move so we can center the sink on the wall) and the toilet plumbing has been updated to copper. Luan is on the floor in the sink and toilet area. Big, brown adhesive dots have been sanded off the wall. Monday the tub comes out! Of course, our tub is not standard size and the new tub is 2 inches longer so a bit of framing needs to be done. Here's hoping they don't run in to a lot of damaged wood when they pull the tub and tile out.

Really, what's one more project? I love, love, love the items that Kelli makes. Have you seen her quilts/pillows? You should go check it all out. While you are there you should consider signing up for her Joseph's Coat quilt along. After all, what's just one more project? I am looking forward to getting started. The requirements list is posted and now I need to gather my supplies. Oh, and I have a scarf to finish knitting, 2 flimsies waiting to be made in to finished quilts, a few bee quilt blocks to sew and a few mini quilts to make. Sure, I have time for one more project!

I whipped up Beki's block yesterday. She asked for a log cabinish style block and we had the opportunity to add our fabric to those Beki sent out. I dug in to my scrap bins and found, what I think are, perfect fabrics to finish the block. Beki's only requirement was that the black fabric be used as the center of the block.

What a lovely package to come home to. I was out of town traveling for work and got to open a parcel containing these wonderful goodies!!! October's STUD theme was Woodland and boy, oh boy, is this awesome! Nannette sent the best package! Every swap I've received has been fantastic - they just keep getting better and better. I received a lovely mini, moose tracks chocolate (which I am munching my way through), a really cute pin cushion (I was just thinking the other day that I need to make a new one), buttons, chenille bias and a really cute card. Isn't this fantastic!!! I know what I am going to make for Nannette and intend to work on it this week.

After a few weeks of pondering what to do with the fabric and a lack of motivation, I finally got inspired and did some sewing over the last week.

This 1st set of blocks for Buzz Cuts October was a quick sew. I immediately new that I wanted to use large pieces to keep the patterns as complete as possible. The blocks are 9.5" square and 6.5" x 9.5",

This was a fun one. September was my month for another virtual bee I am in and I also chose to have the participants make a string block. Unfortunately, I did not have enough to finish the 4th block (upper right corner). Strings are fun but do take me a bit of time to put together.
This block took me 4+ weeks to put together. I just could not figure out what I wanted to sew. The request was a Halloween block and we received a large assortment of Halloween fabrics. When it's all said and done, I really, really like the way this block came out.
Last but not least, yesterday I whipped up 4 blocks for Quilt Blocks for Everyone. We sew 2 blocks per month and I had not gotten September's done. So, a bit of determination and a few hours later, September and October are done and ready to post.

Anyone who knows me knows that I hate, hate, hate being late. And, boy, is this block late.

I received some great kitchy kitchen fabric, 3 solid fabrics and 2 colors of embroidery cotton. The lovely packet of goods arrived in early August (it may have even been late July). The request for August's block was simple. Make a block that featured the kitchen print fabric and do a bit of embroidery. Simple, right? Well, not for me. I just could not find or think of a block that I wanted to do and I did not want to settle. Finally, yesterday I opened a book I had at home and got inspired. It took me a bit of thinking and figuring but, when it was all said and done, the block came out pretty much the way I wanted. It's kind of hard to tell from the picture but the block is a clock.

This past Saturday we went to the Michigan State University football season opener. They played Montana State and crushed them! It was sunny and wam - beautiful weather. Almost my entire family went to the game. Can you believe that I never went to a football game while I was a student at MSU? The half time show was a tribute to America and the armed forces. Very cool indeed.

Earlier this year I joined a flickr group where you get a partner and swap chocolate, fabric and a few extra treats. Since we were vacationing/traveling much of July I skipped that month. And, I have to say, I kind of missed getting the treats together for a swap partner. Well, that works out pretty well for my August partner because I put in more chocolate and fabric than normal! Today is the deadline so I have to get the post office before they close (oh, that's after going to the pharmacy (for the 3rd time in as many days) and picking the car up from a repair at the dealer and working 7a-4p).

We're heading home this weekend. To off set my vacation balance I am working longer days this week (even got some billable work done on Sunday). It all sounds good until you have to get up even earlier than normal and get to the office. It's all worth it! We're going to the MSU game on Saturday w/ the family. Go Spartans!!!

Ya-ha-whoey!!! I have all but 1 of the August virtual bee blocks done. Jody was very specific about what she wanted - sent us templates and cutting guide. This is going to be a fun quilt top a la Denyse Schmidt.

Approximately 2 months ago I got a project that was going to take me away from home 4 days/week (turns out I only had to travel for 3 weeks). So, seeing how I was not going to take my sewing machine along with me, I decided to pick up a new hobby.....knitting. Yup, who does not have time for another hobby? Ok, let's say you find the time.....where to find the money to buy the supplies and then the room to store everything. My very compulsive, organizing self is having a hard time with the new supplies. My 'space' is looking a bit disheveled and full. I've already completed 1 project and have 2 others going. I have the next one picked out ... more on that later. Ok, honestly? I have supplies at home for the next 6 projects.

Yet another virtual bee block. I am slowly catching up. I only have 2 more to do for August. One will be simple as we were given very specific directions. The other I have no idea for yet. So, I knit instead.

Anyway, this recipient of this block asked that green be the predominant color. Yea, well, my 1st block was mostly white. Luckily, I was 80% finished when I noticed my mistake and had time to easily make a change. This block is the result. I like it.

Vacation...had to get away

We're back from vacation. We eeked out 3 weeks in MI (1 1/2 weeks of which were actually vacation and I worked the other 1 1/2 weeks). Spent a great week at the cottage playing in the water, reading, watching movies, taking the boat out, eating....just lazin' around.

Suffice it to say, I am way behind in the virtual quilting bees I participate it. I sewed up a block this evening and have 4 more to go. I've had my eye on this style block for a while now and really love how this one came together. September is my month in one of the bees and this block has given me an idea....more to come.

Sunday Soundings

My weekend was not as productive as I had hoped it would be. I did not get home from PA until 1:30 am Saturday morning (was scheduled to land at 10:30 pm Friday night). However, on the plus, side I was able to see my mom during my 3 hour layover. Now I'm back in PA posting from my hotel room. I left home at 2:15 this afternoon - 398 miles, 7.75 hours and only 1 wrong turn later and I am back in a hotel room. It's crazy, I know, but I was bumbed that, while being out of town, I won't be able to do any sewing. So, I decided to take up a knitting project (more on that later (maybe)) to do in the hotel room after work, exercise, etc.

I've gotten a wee bit of sewing done in the last week or so. I made July's blocks for a swap I am in. Each block is from fabric on hand. I am still not getting the points perfect but there are getting better.

Saturday I wiped up a superhero cape for our soon-to-be 3 years old nephew. My husband drew out the letter and I made the cape up w/ fabric and notions from my stash. I am not completely happy with the stitching on the circle but, generally speaking, I am pleased with the overall result.

I am getting some projects done. Today I sewed up Marja's spiderweb block for the 6"-12" mini swap group. I really enjoyed going through my scraps to put this block together....it was a trip down memory lane reminding me of past projects and some people I had not thought of in a long while.
A bit ahead of the game, I also got Mary's block for Buzz Cuts July. Mary asked for stars in 12.5", 9.5" or 6.5". She very generously sent lots of great fabric. I, however, mis-cut, misjudged, mis-sewed, mis-everything and only had enough to do one 12.5" block. Even then, I ran out of the fabric and had to improvise. Even though it did not come out as planned, I really do like the finished block.I took on a new assignment at work that will send me to the SE side of Pittsburgh area every other week from now until, oh, mid-September. No fabric / quilt store nearby (at least that google.com came up with). So, in lieu of sewing maybe I'll take up some knitting or find a place to volunteer at while I am there. I am not really looking forward to being gone so much of the summer but it's a good opportunity and, in this economy, I'm hesitant to say "no" when higher ups ask me to consider a project.

20 years ago today I was attending a celebration at the Palace of Auburn Hills in honor of the Detroit Pistons winning the NBA championship. Most of my peers were sitting in a gymnasium waiting for their name to be called so they could get their high school diploma. 20 years.

I've stitched up a few quilting bee blocks. June was another double block month in the PTQB. Michelle sent out some great Zippity Doo Dah fabric by Sandy Gervais for Moda and requested a traditional 12 1/2" block. This was a fun block to put together - went quickly, too.

Stephanie asked for a spiderweb block and sent along some great fabrics. I added just 2 fabrics to complete her block.I cannot wait to see both of the quilt tops all completed. They are going to look just great!

Finally! Susi finally received the mini I sent her for May's S.T.U.D. The theme (which I got to pick for the group) was 'Twisted Traditional'. I decided to modernize a traditional Amish quilt pattern by using non-traditional colors, quilting and couching (which was a total blast and I will do a lot more of). You cannot really see it too well, but I couched purple embroidery thread on the purple fabric bordering the large center diamond. I know I have said this before but I really wanted to keep this one for myself. It was made completely from fabrics in my stash.

I finally put together the quilt top made up of blocks sewn by the great group of sewers in the Pieced Together Quilting Bee. I wound up making 2 1/2 blocks due to a few of the blocks being a different size. The remaining 2 blocks will be showcased on the pieced back of the quilt or maybe as a pillow (as suggested by a fellow swapper). I think it's going to be great. I love it so far. I am not sure what I am going to do for the binding or quilting. Any thoughts?

It's May 27th - not March! Did someone forget to tell Mother Nature? Woke up to temps below 40, wind and rain. Not exactly the mid-late spring weather I was expecting. The flowers, however, seem to like it. This flowerbed was put in summer of 2007. Many of the perennials were wintersown and planted last summer. The bed has filled in a bit since my last gardening post. The iris (3rd photo) is in a different bed and is blooming like crazy. The upside to less than perfect weather is I don't feel bad staying inside and sewing. Friday I received Jean's fabric for Buzz Cuts June. Jane asked for blocks either 6.5", 9.5" or 12.5" and she likes circles, triangles, squares and rectangles. This is what I came up with (sorry for the poor photo quality):

Where did the weekend go? It seems like I was always doing something but got very little completely done. Can we rewind and start it all over?

I did manage to get the mini done for Mini Quilt in a Bag Swap. It's packaged with a little extra treat and is ready to go to the post office. For this round, our swap partner send out fabric to be used as the center square in a log cabin block. Diane sent me a butterfly fabric that gave me the chance to use some bright, fun fabrics.And look at what my partner sent back to me? Isn't it great? Makes me want to go play in the garden (well, maybe I better weed it first). Over the past few days I did get 3 blocks made and in the mail for a block swap I am in. We're all making the same block just in different colors (whatever that month's recipient requests). These blocks go together pretty quickly and are made w/ fabrics from my stash. I'm ahead of the game here b/c these blocks are for June. I'll have to pick up some more white fabric. Other than that, the blocks will be made from fabric I have on hand.And last, but certainly not least, I got the goods put together and ready to send out to Diane in May's Chocolate & Fabric swap. Diane said she likes holiday fabric. So, I sent along a bundle of Christmas fabric from my way-too-much-need-to-purge Christmas fabric stash. The card (back right) was sewn on my embroidery machine. Pretty neat, eh?!

P.S. The Red Wings beat Chicago yesterday!!! Go, go, go Wings!!!

Yes, mine does!!! We had a frost advisory last night so I did go out and cover up a few of the plants. As it happens. we did not get a frost and all plants seem to be happy and healthy this moring.

Back in the late summer of 2007 I came across this method of sowing seeds. Can I just tell you that I'll never do seeds any other way again? I prepared ~20 containers and from that got more plants than I had room for. In fact, I gave some away and then put others in a make shift flower bed in the median (we live on a divided road). I put a few of the plants in to 4" pots where they spent the winter and are now waiting to be planted in to the ground. Oh, and the best part----all the plants (except for 1) that were wintersown were perennials.

Here's a picture of one of my flower beds. With the exception of the hibiscus and the clematis, all the plants were either wintersown, divisions from other plants or free (I swap iris with a friend of mine every year). All the plants pictured are perennials. I did not wintersow any plants this year and I wish I did!!! P.S. the 2 plant trays you see in the photos were plants given to me by a co-worker (she also got a few of the wintersown plants).

Me? I am. I made May's To-Do list and have already been able to cross off a number of items. Well, I should add that a few of the items on May's list are carry-overs from April!

This past weekend I whipped up 6 blocks for John. May is John's month for the Buzz Cuts virtual quilting bee. The fabric he sent out was such fun to work with. Around block 5 I started to lose my creative juice. I took a break and was able to come up with a 6th block. John wanted blocks in varied sizes (6.5", 9.5" and 12.5").

Allison, for PTQB May, wanted a curved pieced block. I have never tried curved piecing until this weekend. I am really pretty happy with the results. I love the Drunkards Path block and this placement variation. In fact, I've always wanted to make one but was put off by fear of curved piecing and cutting out a bunch of template pieces. However, after using this tutorial the entire idea is much more palatable. I still don't know that I would have the patience to piece an entire quilt myself but I am sure I can handle a crib sized one.

And, finally, last night I made Chen's block for AQB1. Chen sent out fabric from the much coveted Mendocino line by Heather Ross. I think the purple-y octopi fabric was my favorite. I wanted to keep the fabric pieces as whole as possible so that the patterns were visible. I added a bit of applique and really like the simplicity of the block.

I still have Colleen's block to make (PTQB has 2 participants for May). I've got some ideas brewing and should be able to get it done this week. Then I really have to concentrate and finish up my partner's Mini Quilt in a Bag (due May 31st).

Walking, walking, walking

Every day for the last 7+ weeks we have been taking Odin for a 2-4 mile walk. So far, he's only missed 8 out of the 53 days. Some days he goes for a 2 mile walk in the morning and the evening. Yesterday, for example, we walked Odin before work and before dinner for a total of ~5 miles. I also walked 2.5 miles during my lunch break.

Odin looks great. In fact, he's down 5 pounds from when we took him to the vet last fall (not that he needed to lose any weight). We walked Odin during the winter months. However, those walks were shorter and less frequent. Much of his winter exercise consisted of chasing snowballs and couch surfing (he's a pro at both). When we the weather warmed and we started walking longer distances I was a bit concerned that it was too much walking too quickly and that he'd have a stenosis flare up. However, our vet says he looks great and to keep it up.

Dang dog......he's at my goal weight. Well, at least one of us is. But I'm working on it and I'm going to get there, too.

This is what 170 hexagons look like. Hexagons of Hope is collecting 2" hexagons to be distributed to quilters displaced from their homes as a result of the brushfires in Australia.This project allowed m to use up some scraps and fabric that I was not sure what I was ever going to do with. In the process, I realized that I really need to stop and look at small sections of fabric (even fabric I thought I did not like) b/c when I do I actually find that I like the fabric. Did that make sense? Oddly enough, it makes sense to me.

The finished top sat (um, hung, actually) on my design wall for a month. I fought w/ my machine when it came to quilting the top. I tried a different binding technique and it did not go so well. Alas, it's finished, washed and nice and crinkly. This is the 4th doll quilt that I made for my friend's grand-daughter (1 for each of them). My own improved pattern made entirely of scraps.

We had an interesting weekend. The weather was great for walks at the local State Park (how lucky am I that we have an amazing State Park w/i 5 miles of our house), working in the yard and organizing my space (more on that later). All the positives were overshadowed by the unexpected death of a long time family friend last Friday.

Sometime since my last post I finished up Stephanie's block for the PTQB. I really like the fabric she sent. My initial design was to sew the block w/o having to do any pieced strips. Well, that did not work out and I'm actually happy about that as I really like the way her block came out.A sunny spring day at Green Lakes State Park. There were lots of runners, walkers and other dogs. Odin was spent after the 3+ mile walk.

Bees, Swaps and Winnings

I've been away (week away for work and Easter weekend with family) and I have so much to tell you. While I was away I received 4 more blocks from the PTQB. A few of the blocks are a different size than the others. Not sure how that happened but I love the scrappy look of them so I'm not changing a thing!

I also received Stephanie's fabric for PTQB. She's asked for a Log Cabin block and sent along some great fabrics. I'll get that block stitched up and in the mail by Friday.

I purchased the goods to send to my April Choco & Fabric swap partner, Tracy. I bought the chocolate and fabric from small shops in St. Lawrence County, NY. I'm going to add a few more items before I send the goods out on Friday. I also received my mini for the Mini Quilt in a Bag Swap - Round 2 from John. I sent him a pack of charm squares and he made this great mini. I love it and cannot wait to hang it up. It's some cheery and cozy.

I received March's S.T.U.D. from Kara-Lee. I just love the colors she used. Isn't it great.

In March I was the winner in 2 giveaways (I posted about the one item here). The items arrived before I left town but I just did not have time to post about the goodies. I won this pillow from Karen (the picture is from Karen's blog). The pillow is made from selvedges / salvages (really, which is the correct spelling). I just love it. Right now it's in our office but it will be moving to my sewing room in a matter of days. The fabric is from Sis Boom (Jennifer Paganelli). You know, I might not have picked them out in the store but I have to say that I love them and already have a few ides brewing.

In my never-ending, OCD way of organization and desire to organize my sewing room, I finally purchased a small cabinet that, I hope, will hold my stash. I cannot tell you how long it took me to decide what to get (I ended up w/ a $30.00 piece from Lowe's). I looked at Ikea, Lowes, Container Store, Craigslist, etc. I looked at everything from a credenza, dresser, linen cabinet, china hutch, etc. I just could not commit and feared making the wrong choice. The unit is home and needs to be assembled. In the meantime, I've started to refold some of the fabrics using this technique. I really thought it would be boring and too time consuming. So far, it's going ok (although I am just getting started) and the fabric looks neat and orderly....just the way I like it.

My favorite place...My pop went to the cottage just before Easter to assess any winter damage and get ready to open it up for the season. Now that I am in NY I don't get to the cottage as much as I'd like to. However, we still manage ~1 week per summer. Too bad we are not independently wealthy and have to work or else I'd be there all summer long. Snow still on the ground on 04/09/09.

Busy day yesterday. Ran some errands, went to my 1st quilt show put on by a local quilt guild (it was ok - not very big), finished some virtual bee blocks and WATCHED MSU BEAT UConn!!!!!! Go Spartans!!!! I cannot tell you how happy I am that a hometown team is in the Final 4. Detroit needs all the positive input it can get. The Final 4 will bring some much needed, although temporary, life to a terrific city.

I received Erin's fabric for the Pieced Together Quilting Bee yesterday. I had intended to let the fabric simmer for a while and work on them when I get back week after next. But then, I took some of my own advice....strike when inspiration hits and don't put off till tomorrow what you can do today. So, I managed to get 2 blocks for Erin. These were fun to put together and the fabrics were great to work with. Erin is calling her quilt 'squares and rectangles'....hence the following blocks...

It's only April 2nd and I already have blocks done for 2 of April's virtual bee participants. However, 1 of the bees has 2 participants for April. So, I'll have a total of 4 blocks to make. I don't have the fabric from the other participants so that leaves me time to work on other projects (like working on the quilt for my nephew). Blocks for Sarah are done and in the mail. Sarah requested wonky houses. This was my 1st attempt and I enjoyed the process. I find that I have a lot (or it seemed like a lot) of odd, tiny scraps left over when I try wonky / improv sewing.

Chillin'

Just Chillin'. The big goof is just chillin' on the ottoman. And you know, he has never fallen off it. See that brown thing in the bottom, left of the picture? That is his dog bed. And, yes, he uses it, and the couch, and the guest bed, and our bed, and our laps and the chair and ottoman. Spoiled? To be sure. Here's a good one....our dog is at my goal weight - how many people say that?!Us? We're chillin', waiting for the snow that was forecasted for this evening. Yea, after we have 60+ temps on Saturday. Ah, spring in central NY.

This weekend I finished up April's Buzz Cuts blocks. It was a lot of fun working with the fabrics that were sent out. We're only required to make 1 block. I had enough to get 3 full fulls block and 1/2 of a 4th block.

Bits & Pieces

I made this mini (measures ~11 1/4 inch square) for my March S.T.U.D. partner. I've had this quilt on the radar for a while now and thought that a mini would be a good size to try. My deluded self thought this would be a quick and easy quilt to do. Ah, well, it was not hard so much as time consuming and a bit frustrating. I followed this great tutorial. Piecing the individual squares went quickly. Laying out the squares and assembling them into a top took me a long, long time (considering I thought I'd have this done in 2 hours). I arranged and re-arranged and sewed more blocks, cut off part of blocks that I had sewn (I really hate doing that --- it kind of feels like a waste of time, energy and materials) and, finally, pieced it together. I kept the quilting simple and random (it actually shows up pretty good in the photo below).I learned a number of things with this project: 1) I did not enjoy the process enough to do it again (w/o serious motivation from an outside source - like someone sitting next to me saying, "here, sew this together..."); 2) I am in to squares, simple and clean lines right now, and 3) I really, really am loving making minis w/o a binding. I love that there is nothing to stop your eye and the field is complete. I wanted the color to run right off the side of the quilt and felt that a binding was not going to work for me and this mini.

Maybe I should play the lottery. I have never been a winner of raffles, drawings, contests, games of chance, etc. Until this year. I've won a few fabric and swap prizes this year (blogged here). This morning, sitting in my email inbox was the super terrific, holy-cow-are-you-sure-it's-my-number email from Karen telling me I had won the selvage pillow giveaway on her blog. I love selvages, no, I covet them. Ever since I started reading Karen's blog and came across Jodie's amazing creations (poke around Jodie's blog and look at all the cool stuff she creates), I have been saving selvages. I am so excited and cannot wait for the pillow to arrive. Luckily, Karen and I live in the same state so, hopefully, it won't take long for the USPS to deliver the goods.

Late last week I finished up the last of the March virtual bee blocks. Good thing, too, as I've already received April fabric for 2 of the virtual bees I am in. I was able to get 2 full blocks from the fabric that Sarah sent as part of Another Quilting Bee 1. Sarah sent out some great orange / white / green / pink fabrics. I really enjoyed working with the fabrics and plan to add some to my personal stash.

Spiderwebs

I am so excited about this quilt. As of yesterday, I have received blocks from 5 of the virtual bee participants. I did my best to estimate how much fabric each block required. Some gals had enough to do an extra block / partial block. If each participant makes 1 block I'll have 19 blocks (I still have to make my own block). Not sure how big I am going to make the quilt. I am thinking full size and that means I'll need more than 20 blocks (each block is roughly 11" square). I love it, I love it, I love it!!! So glad I went with the scrappy look and the 1930s reproduction fabrics.

Mailbag Monday

Have I told you how much I love getting letters in the mail? Well, I do. Yea, email is great....instant communication and all that. And, yes, I fancy myself to be a bit of a granola and don't like to generate unnecessary waste (even if it's going to be recycled). But, there is something about walking to the mailbox, pulling out the day's delivery and, gasp, yes, a letter, hand written addressed to me. I don't allow myself to open the letter until I am in the house, the other mail has been put away and I have shrugged off the work day. Then, very purposefully, I open the letter and focus only on reading the contents. Yes, I love getting letters.

Yesterday, however, was a day of packages which is equally as exciting. I received a mini quilt from my February S.T.U.D. partner, Jeannette. I just love the cheery colors and the green thread she used for the quilting (picture below). Jeannette also included a bag of trims and buttons and a lovely blank note card (yes, I even love to send letters).

Box number 2 contained a bundle from my March A Little Chocolate a Little Fabric swap partner, Kim. I just mailed Kim's package out yesterday and knew she had mailed hers to me a few days ago. This was Kim's 1st swap and she did a great job. The striped handbag was filled with fabric, chocolate, a salsa recipe (with seeds to grow some of the salsa ingredients), cutting mats, ribbon and a wrist pin cushion.

Last, but certainly, not least was an envelope from Rachael containing a block from the Pieced Together Quilting Bee. Rachael also sent along a really cute makeup bag. My camera was not working very well so I'll have to take photos tonight and post them tomorrow. In the meantime, here's a picture of the 4 blocks I have received so far (top 2 from Chen, bottom 2 from Sarah).

Ticking off

That's what I am doing. Ticking things off my March list. This weekend I finished up a mini quilt for my swap partner,John, put together the goods for my March A Little Fabric A Little Chocolate Swap partner (picture below) and cut green and yellow charm square for a swap-bot.com swap. If you are my swap partner and don't want to ruin the surprise....stop reading now!! I sent along a fabric cuff from the pattern found at: http://www.jchandmade.typepad.com./ It was fun and a quick project to make. The fabric note cards were a first for me and I'll definitely be making more.I joined Round 2 of the Mini Quilt In A Bag swap and John is my partner. For this round we sent our partner a charm pack (John sent me a Flutterby charm pack), batting and backing fabric. I, of course, did not read the directions correctly and forgot to send John the backing fabric and batting. Alas, I felt so guilty that I had to include some extra goodies w/ John's mini (I understand that John is on a bit of a fabric buying freeze). I took me a good while to decide what I was going to do w/ the charms (I used a portion of all but 4 squares). Even after I had a plan and began laying out the blocks out I was still just not feeling it. Fast forward 2 days and the top is now sewn together and --- I Love It! I want to keep it. I kept the quilting simple and turned the quilt instead of using a binding. I wanted the top to extend all the way out to the sides. I did, for the first time ever, do some embellishing on the quilt top. I could have added a lot more but figured I better keep it simple. Next time...the sky's the limit!

Saturday the temperature hit 50! No winter jacket needed. Now, I am not silly enough to think that winter is officially over here in central NY. But, it sure would be nice! Odin got a nice long walk Saturday, Sunday and today. He's not a cold weather fan and during the winter he does not get nearly the exercise he deserves. Me? I need to get back in to shape or I am going to have a miserable summer (as hard as I try, I let my self perception limit me from doing things....I know better but...).

I went to another class at Nadine's on Saturday. We did some cutwork embroidery on white fabric to make a pillow case (that I have yet to sew together). Not necessarily a style that I would put on clothes for myself but I can see using it for gifts (wedding, baby, etc). Next time I'll buy pillowcases on sale to use for cutwork. I'll post a picture as soon it's completed.

This weekend I completed Stephanie's block for the Pieced Together Quilting Bee. I've never done hand embroidery and I quite enjoyed it. There is something relaxing about it. I'll definitely do some more!
I finished up 4 blocks for Kathy in this bee. She sent us a focus fabric to be included somewhere in every block. I think I need to do reading on color values, etc as I really don't think my blocks highlight the focus fabric. The 3rd block is not quite to size (middle picture). I did not have enough of the blue fabric to frame the left and right sides and I did not want to piece it. Kathy said she has extra fabric so she'll be able to finish that block to the correct size. The 4th block is truly a scrappy block. It is not trimmed to size yet - figure I'll let Kathy decide how (if) she wants to use it in the quilt.

Marching into March

It feels like I have been going non stop since Sunday. If that's going to be the rhythm for March I am going to be exhausted by the 31st!

I finished the mini for my Feb Swap Till You Drop partner, Cindy. It took me 2 attempts to get this swap mini done (see my previous post re: y-seams). I kept the quilting simple and clean. Overall size is just shy of 15" square. I machine quilted lines using a variegated pink thread.

I am in 3 virtual quilting bees. So far, I have received the fabric for 2 of the bees. The alphabet block is too cute. We have the option of embroidering the alpha block. I have to admit I am a bit intimidated as I've never done hand embroidery before. However, I am going to practice a bit and give it a go!

I finished everything that was on Feb's list. I have yet to write out the list for March but it will look very similar. There is just something very satisfying about crossing something off as done (or delegated). I really need to start putting my nephew's quilt together. I may need to take a month off of swapping to do that.....um, maybe I can do it all....

Why, oh why y-seams?

One of the February mini quilt swap themes is paper piecing. I was so excited to give this method another try (this was my 1st attempt). I found a star pattern, made 9 blocks and read/watched some y-seam tutorials. Ah, this seems doable. I sat down in front of my sewing machine fully expecting a few issues but no major problems. Boy was I wrong. 2 hours later I figured out that if took the blocks apart I could sew them together in such a way to avoid y-seams altogether (this is a very, very good discover as the y-seams were awful). Ok, let's go that route. Fast forward 1 hour...I have 1 block successfully separated and the rest are in the trash. Why? Because I riped holes in the fabric w/ the seam ripper, tore the blocks in half out of frustration and, basically, called it quits. Now I have another mini to finish (barely started it last night) and get postmarked by 2/28. Yes, I could be late. Yes, my swap partner assured me she would understand. However, I don't consider that an option. I don't want to be known as a late swapper!

Meanwhile, I am prepping the fabric to send out to my PTQB group as March is my month! This, too, is do out on/by 02/28. I am really excited about my blocks. We are doing spiderweb blocks w/ Kona white and 1930's reproduction fabric. Oh, and it's paper pieced - a 1st for most of the PTQB group. They all were willing to give paper piecing a go. Here's a photo of some of the fabric (not all fabrics appear in the picture).

February Musings

I miss the days of being unavailable and out of contact. I like coming home to a message on the answering machine. Oh, the light is blinking. Who can it be? Is it good news? A seldom heard from friend or family member? Well, thanks to cell phones, Skype, Sametime and Linkedin I am accessible pretty much 24-7. And now the invitation to join Facebook? Why? I mean, really, why? I already communicate with everyone that I care to. Does the world really need another way to find me? Can't we keep the mystery alive a little longer?

This week I received a fabulous paper pieced quilt from Cindy, my Feb S.T.U.D. partner. It reminds me so much of spring (as Cindy intended). I've always loved the pineapple pattern. She included some lovely extras, too (fabric, chocolate, stickers and a gardening magazine). Cindy set the bar high. I've started on her mini and will have it done and out by the end of the month if not sooner.

I also received this package from Kathy, Jan's S.T.U.D. partner. Isn't this the best valentine ever? Kathy found this in a Japanese magazine and recreated it for me (the magazine was all in Japanese). One cannot forget the terrific extras she sent as well. I love sending notes to friends and will put those note cards to good use! What a generous lady!

And here is the mini that I sent to my other Feb S.T.U.D. partner. The theme was 'Anything Goes". My partner recently redid her sewing room in aqua and red and I took my cue from that.

Holiday ... bah humbug!

Happy President's Day. For those of you that get the day off I hope you enjoy it. But, can you do me a favor? Don't ask if I had the day off. Don't rub it in. Don't remind me that my next paid holiday is not until Memorial Day. Like many of the working stiffs out there, I don't have a holiday today. I didn't get MLK Jr. Day off either. And, yes, I have to work on Good Friday. I am feeling a bit snarky today. It started when I woke up late for work. I extricated myself from bed (where one great dane was laying across my legs and on husband was snoring away) , ran through the shower and rushed out the door. Oh, the dog and husband? Enjoying a week at home since DH has the week off. Me? Jealous? Not really. Just anxious. Anxiously awaiting my next paid holiday - in May! May, people! That's 3+ months away! Ah, ok, I'm done.

On a bright note, look at the fantastic mini that came in the mail on Saturday. Cindy, my Feb swap partner, made this paper pieced mini and sent along a bunch of goodies (fabric, chocolate and a gardening magazine). Doesn't it just scream Spring? It reminds me of crocus. It makes me very happy!

Lucky Me!

Tuesday I received this lovely surprise package from Kim (host of Swap Til You Drop (STUD)). I posted a while ago that I never win anything. Well, I guess I need to change my tune. I won FQs in Dec, different FQs in Jan and now this spectacular package for Feb from Kim. Maybe I should play the lotto!
Today our mail carrier delivered this lovely package from Nancy (feb's a little chocolate / a little fabric swap). The chocolate was consumed pretty quickly. The fabric fits in perfectly with a black and white project I am cooking up. It's an amazing package from a very generous lady!

I managed to do a few minutes of sewing last night: 1 wonky star block for the Bushfire Charity Quilts, let down the hem in a pair of pants for my husband and quilted a mini quilt for Netta, my STUD 'Anything Goes' swap partner. I'll have the house to myself for a few hours (well, Odin will be home, too) so I hope to get some sewing in and maybe clean up my sewing room a bit.

All you need to do is follow a simple tutorial found on the flickr site for a 12.5" block - use up those scraps! Come on, get involved. How long will it take you to sew 1 block? 30 minutes? Don't feel like sewing? Ok, do you have some backing sized fabric you really don't want anymore? Send it along. What's that you say? You'd rather throw money at the problem? Hey, that will work too. Send along a gift certificate to an online fabric shop (post your intentions on the flickr site and I am sure you'll get some input/direction). 2 days!!!! It will be 2 days since I've done any sewing. Life and philanthropic endeavors are cutting in to my sewing time. Last night was a Junior League meeting and tonight is another Junior League meeting. Don't feel too sorry for me....tonight's meeting is all about wine paring. You know what that means, right? Wine, food and socializing!

Just One More...day on the Special K diet (essentially cereal for bfast and lunch w/ fruit snacks and then a healthy dinner), bill paid (thank god we don't have a Nordstrom's near us), set of push ups this morning, smile for a stranger.

So far, I am making good time on Feb's 'List'. I finished Feb's block for the Pieced Together Quilting Bee. Katie send out great fabrics and I improv pieced the block. I am finding that I do like improv sewing but it does take me a lot longer to put a block together this way. My month to send out fabric is March. I am not sure what I'm going to send out yet - have not narrowed down the color palette or basic style yet. Anyway, here's Katie's block:

This week I finished the curvy tablerunner. I tried some new techniques on this project (e.g., couching and I put the binding on differently than I normally do). All in all, I really like it. My husband says it's a bit Halloweeny but I don't think so. Wouldn't it be cool to weave some fabrics and then make a handbag out of it? I think so! The ideas are already brewing.

Lists and a listing dog

I like lists. What I like most about lists is the feeling of accomplishment when I can cross an item off 'The List'. I am not opposed to breaking items in to smaller, more manageable tasks which can often lead to a lengthy list. I like my lists to be neat and clean. No smudges, no scratched out items due to improper spelling, only 1 color of ink. I have lists for work and lists for home. February's creative list is starting to take shape:
1. Buzz Cuts (Feb) virtual bee - mail blocks
2. Finish curvy black and white tablerunner
3. Pieced Together Quilting Bee - sew and mail block
4. Choco / Fabric swap - gather items and mail out (by 2/17)
5. Pieced Together Quilting Bee - get my fabric ready and send out to participants (goal: 02/21)
6. Swap Til You Drop - Anything Goes - make and send (by 02/28)
7. Swap Til You Drop - Paper Pieced - make and send by (02/28)
8. Hop, Skip and Slip - finish cutting out fabric (for my nephew)

Odin, our dog, has stenosis (vertebrae compression of the spinal cord - some breeders call it 'Wobblers'). As needed, as determined by us, we put him on prednisone (our vet has approved this and has provided us w/ proper dose and weening info). He's on it right now and usually responds really well to it. This time Odin seems to be a bit slower to respond. Or, is it my imagination? Is it more the fact that he's, in dane years, past middle aged (Odin is 4 1/2 years old)? Odin gets around, up and off the couch and beds just fine. He just seems to be a bit more hitchy, lists to one side or the other a bit more than normal. Time will tell. For now, I am going to make some room on the couch for me and give him a good cuddle!

Swaps and WIPs

January was the 1st month that I participated in this swap. The theme was 'Sing It, Watch It, Read It'. Now, anyone that knows me knows that I am a planner. I've recently decided to join the world of improv sewing/quilting and decided that Jan's swap was a good place to start. My swap partner, Jill, gave me 3 book titles to work from. It finally decided on To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Here's the final product. It's hard to see but I embroidered 2 quotes from the book on to the quilt.
This week finished w/ a lovely package from Jill. She and I finished our swap projects at the same time! The 1st picture is actually a picture from Jill's blog (since my pics are not nearly as clear). Jill picked 'Crazy' by Patsy Cline (one of the 3 ideas I sent her). This mini is fantastic - hand embroidery, vintage lace and buttons! Love, love, love it!

Here is a peak at the black and white project I started yesterday. Nadine had another free class and we made wavy table runners. I have to finish quilting and add some embellishments. So far, I love it! I can totally see doing this to make fabric for bags, totes, scarves, etc! Possibilities abound!

Just One More...project done, walk w/ the dog, pilates video done, trip to the grocery to buy fruits and veggies!

Thursday ramblings

I finished my 1st block for Buzz Cuts, a virtual quilting bee (we are only required to make 1 block from the fabric sent to us). February was our 1st month and I am happy to say that I am done ahead of time! The 1st block may already be a pattern but, to me, it was an improv piece. I doodled on a scratch pad and then went to the cutting table. It took out 1 seam 3x because I could not get the blocks to line up. It still isn't exact (which I am learning to be 'ok' with) but close. I had enough to do a 2nd improv block. I may have enough fabric to make a 3rd block.

Do you shampoo & condition your hair everyday? I have been told, for years, that it's better for the color (yes, I have highlights) and health of hair to not wash it w/ shampoo and conditioner every day. Easier said then done. It took me a few weeks of getting used to it, but now I can say that out of 7 days I only wash my hair 5 days. This will be harder come nice weather when I usually run and exercise more. Right now I've got it figured that I can run in the morning, wash my hair and then run the evening of the next day, wash my hair and then not wash it the 3rd day (which works when I am on a 2 on / 1 off running schedule). Make sense? Maybe it's doing a small part to also conserve water? I don't know but I'm going with it. Oh, I should add, that I still get my haircut back in MI (we live in central NY). I just cannot bring myself to find someone else. I've been going to the same person for 22 years. She knows what my hair will do and, more importantly, what I will do with my hair (plus: she gives me a great deal). Tomorrow I am going to a local stylist to see how we get along and if I like the way she cuts my hair (I have a short cut that needs some maintenance). Wish me luck! I will continue to get major cuts/color in MI (helps that we go back to visit family somewhat frequently). My husband thinks I am nuts. He just does not get that you cannot just walk in to any old salon, sit down and get a great cut/color/style!

I was finally able to successfully use the fab-u-motion unit for my Pfaff to finish quilting Jan's mini-quilt for my swap partner. The theme was 'Sing it, Watch it, Read it'. My partner gave me 3 book titles and I got to use one of them as inspiration for the mini-quilt. I had been struggling with the free motion quilting - it had become a battle of wills. Thankfully, Nadine, my Pfaff dealer, is a peach and patiently answered all my questions while encouraging me to keep at it. This is only the 2nd mini-quilt I have made and this is the 1st time I've designed something myself w/ no pattern to go by. It came out pretty close to the image I had in my head. Hey, I guess that's improv sewing!

We had company this morning. The photo below was actually taken earlier this month. This morning they were laying down in the yard and I could not fit them all in one frame. Not really the kind of visitors one expects when they live in the city.

I was already in a great mood this morning. Then, to make everything even better, I found out that Sara had nominated me for an award!!! Thank you, Sara, for thinking of me!Now, I am supposed to list 5 addictions and pass this award on to 5 other blogs. The 1st 3 addictions came to me super easily but I had to give thought to the last 2. Below are my addictions, in no particular order, followed by the 5 blogs I nominated.

1) Shoes - thankfully we don't have a Neiman Marcus near me. Although, www.zappos.com does have free shipping (both ways).

2) Food - there is no way around it, I am a food junkie.

3) Positivity - in my world, I like to surround myself w/ positive people, thoughts, images, vibes, etc.

4) Sweets - sporadically.

5) Fabric - this is an ebb and flow kind of addictions. I can go months w/o wanting to buy fabric and then something snaps and I go on a binge.

This is my sewing room. It's really quite spacious (largest and coldest bedroom in the house). I am thankful that I have this room for my use. However, I want to change it. I don't know exactly how yet. I like things to be neat and orderly or atleast somewhat so and this room is driving me nuts. I have 2 pieces of furniture that were purchased specifically for sewing: the wood table I sew on came from craigslist and a cutting table I bought a number of years ago from Joanne's (which fits perfectly in the dormer). The couch was a hand-me-down from my MIL. It's a sleeper and she barely used it. It really is in great shape. The pattern does not work for me and I would really rather have a drying rack to put my WIPs on. We have a spare room for guests w/ a full size bed plus a full size, elevated aero bed. I think we are covered if we have company (we have very, very few sleepover visits). But, what do we do w/ the couch? Put it in the basement, up on wood and covered to limit dust? We really do not have any other place to put it then in my sewing room. I have not done anything to the room since we moved in 5 1/2 years ago. Any thoughts, ideas?

Just One More trip past the office candy bowl w/o taking anything and heading to the fridge for a carrot instead!

Handbag

Today I went to a local sewing shop to my Pfaff dealer's shop for a free handbag class. We made the Noriko Handbag (please go check out the link to the free pattern from Lazy Girl designs). The pattern and directions were really easy to follow. The pictures do not capture the true color of the fabric or the drape of the bag. I love the shape of the bottom. I have to sew a button on yet for the loop enclosure. I am confident that the next bag I sew (and I will sew more of them) will go together in 1 hour (max).

I am off to try my hand at making split pea soup. Usually my dad saves some of his for me but I ate the last of it a week or so ago. And, since I won't see him again until summer (unless he can come visit sooner - hint hint) I have to give it a go myself.

Pay It Forward

I am taking a bag sewing class tomorrow from this woman. I purchased my last 2 sewing/embroidery machines and most recent serger from her shop. Nadine is one of those people that just oozes creativity, inspiration and instills confidence in others. I'll be sure to post the finished product as soon as it's completed!

I am not a knitter. I appreciate the talent and time but that's as far as I go. I have, in the past, knit 2 items (a cable scarf and a regular old knit and pearl scarf). I just do not have the patience for knitting. I do, however, want a knit möbius. Luckily I know a great lady who is willing to put her needles to work. I've purchased the yarn and the pattern (mine will not have the tag things hanging off of it). Now all I have to do is wait.

I am participating in 'Pay It Forward' (I stumbled across this on Caroline's blog). Here is how it works: The 1st three people to leave a comment expressing interest in participating will receive a handmade gift from me. I will send the gift out sometime within the next 365 days. Mini quilt #1

Ya-ha-whoey!!! I am done with January's mini-quilt swap. This is the 1st project I started and completed so far this year. It is also the 1st time I have done foundation paper piecing and I learned a few things along the way: use tiny stitches (1.5 stitch length on my Pfaff worked well), mist the paper to help remove it from small, tight corners (which this one had a few of), measure twice and cut once and have fun! I really like how cheerful the reproduction fabrics look. All I have left to do is wash it, put the label on the back and send it off (w/ some goodies) to my January swap partner. Guess what? It's snowing, once again! Our average snowfall through Jan. 14 is 56.3 inches. This year we had 95.4 inches as of Jan 14th!!!

Project Improv Block

I changed my mind and decided to post my 1st improv log cabin block. While I do not love it I do like parts of it. I have a clearer idea of what I will do for my next block. The 1st picture below was taken outside and is a bit wonky b/c the block is sitting on a snow drift.It is hard to see but along the left side I did some decorative stitching and the patch of aqua to the right of the teapot is gathered. I really need to learn to take better pictures!

It's snowing again. Big, fluffy flakes - the kind that make you want to go outside and try to catch a snowflake on your tongue.

Project Improv progress

I started my 1st Project Improv block last night. I don't like it. It's not finished yet (is just now ~8" square). I think it might be too many reds? I am going to finish the block and see if it grows on me. At this point it is not ready for public viewing!

Home at last

It was a busy week of travel (NY to MI to CA and back to NY). When I left CA last night it was 80 degrees. When I arrived home this morning it was 6 degrees! I admit, the warm weather, sun, and blue sky was nice to see while in CA but I am glad to be back home. There is nothing better than sleeping in your own bed after a week of dry hotel rooms.

One of the best parts about coming home (of course, seeing DH and dog) was the box of goodies I received from my Jan 'Little Chocolate - Little Fabric' swap partner, Laura. I knew the box would be waiting for me and I made myself unpack before I ripped the box open! Look at the wonderful things she sent!!!

I also managed to finish the top for my Jan mini-quilt swap partner but I don't want to spoil the surprise just yet. I'll post photos once it is completely finished and on it's way to my partner. This was my 1st attempt at paper piecing. In general, I like the process. I used regular copy paper and it was a pain to get the all the paper off - did not enjoy that part of the process. Next time (which will be for Feb's mini-quilt swap) I will use different paper or maybe a really light weight interfacing.

This week I joined a virtual quilting bee. I have followed the progress of a few other virtual bees I am really excited to be a part of this one.

On the road

I am traveling this week for work so no sewing until this weekend. I hope to get a block for Project Improv done and finish cutting out fabric for my nephew's quilt.

Just One More good decision made: I avoided Starbucks in O'Hare airport! But, I did not avoid the one in Grand Rapids. That is ok b/c I ordered a small when I wanted a venti and I got a sugar free instead of full on sugar and whip cream. Also, I had tuna fish for lunch. Making positive food choices while traveling can be a challenge for me (made even harder when traveling w/ others who like to eat a lot). So far so good. Only 3 more days and 5 flights to go! Give me strength!

I finished the binding on a doll quilt I was making for a friend's grandchild. Now I only have 1 more pink one to make. I do like the speed at which the doll quilts go together and, so far, I've only used material from my stash. My new machine and I had a few arguments over the free motion quilting on this one. It won this round and I just tied the top instead of stipple quilting it. There is snow on the ground so I took the photos inside (front, back and machine embroidered flower). I really need to work w/ my digital camera more so the photos are not blurry.

We saw Gran Torino Friday night. It was a good movie. I may be biased given that I am from metro Detroit and that is where the film took place and was shot. On the other hand, I am not the biggest Clint Eastwood fan although I do respect his talent. If you are interested in seeing it I'd suggest going to a matinee - it was good but not necessarily full ticket price worthy.

Snow, cold and soup

They just kind of go together, don't they? Some area schools were delayed and/or let out early today. Man, how I miss snow days. Too bad we don't get them as adults. But, I do have some terrific homemade soup to enjoy on this cold, snowy day. Now, I just have to get it to thaw out so I can heat and eat!

Mitch Albom wrote a great article about Detroit. If you are not familiar with his writing, I encourage you to take a look. Mitch captured the spirit of Detroit and it's residents (which I would expand to include those living in the metro area). When asked where I am from I proudly say, "the Detroit area." I lived my 1st 18 years were one mile from the Detroit city border. I went to the Thanksgiving Day parade, Greek Town, concerts, university, hospital, too many bars / restaurants / coney islands to recall. I've driven the wrong way down a one-way street. I have never, ever felt threatened or scared by the environment I was in. If anything, I feel a mixed sense of hope at what the city was and could be and a deep sadness for all the people that rely on what the media says about Detroit - the ones who have never set foot in the city limits but claim that Detroit is a lost cause, the ones that don't want to give a great city another chance.

Another challenge

I have decided to join Project Improv hosted by Jacquie (go take a look). For me it is a means to move away from patterns and rules and move towards sewing outside the lines. I am so new to this idea that I would not even consider myself a beginner. However, I have a starter project in mind (think 'wonky log cabin') that, if all goes well, may be sent to my mini quilt swap partner next month. The added bonus? Sure, there's one. Every participant will be making an extra block that will be added to others to make a charity quilt. How great is that? Learning something new, pushing my personal boundaries and doing a bit of good along the way! I like it!

I am part of a group and won this round's fat quarters (FQ). There are ten participants and over the next few weeks I will be receiving a FQ from each of them. And you know the best part? I get to start and choose the winner of the next round. It is quite a feeling to know that I will be able to deliver some happy news to a complete stranger. How great is that?

Just before Christmas I came across www.thetoysociety.com. Well, I just could not resist participating. I found a pattern, cut, sewed, stuffed and dropped off my toy on Christmas Eve en route to visit family. I do not know who found it. I love to (pleasantly) surprise people and this was the perfect chance to do just that. I will definitely be doing it again. Check it out!

I joined the Black & White Quilt Challenge. I have a 1st project in mind and have been building a stash of black and white fabrics. I do not know what my 'color' will be yet - still thinking on that one. With the exception of this challenge, I am limiting myself to using up my stash.

Oh, and I am thinking of joining another challenge - it's all about improvisational quilting. Have to think on this one as I am still a sew by the book kind of gal.
